The Sunshine Vitamin, it is produced by the body as a response to sun exposure.

This is one important vitamin, it is responsible for normal growth and development of bones and teeth as it regulates calcium and phosphorus intake.

It is also important in the regulation of insulin levels and aids diabetes management.

Recent studies have shown that a significant percentage of the global population are vitamin D deficient and supplementation is recommended (18-70 years of age; 600 IU). A microgram is 1,000 times smaller than a milligram (mg).

Sometimes the amount of vitamin D is expressed as International Units (IU). 1 microgram of vitamin D is equal to 40 IU. So 10 micrograms of vitamin D is equal to 400 IU.

Sources of vitamin D:

  1. The Sun
  2. Oily fish - salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring
  3. Red meat
  4. Fortified Plant-based milk and cereals
  5. Liver
  6. Egg Yolk
